‘PAHAL’ is a non-profit, non-government and secular voluntary organization registered under the trust Registration Act.
Despite India’s spectacular economic development, millions still have to go hungry; live in most unhygienic conditions, without even basic education for their children; and die of diseases that can be prevented. What is needed is to build a strong civil society that should work in tandem with the government in making a difference in the lives of those who are in need.
Since we formed our organization in 2006 we have retained our essential character as a group of thoughtful and motivated individuals striving for social change. We believe that the various problems that the society faces are interconnected – poverty and over-consumption, unemployment and agricultural crisis, social injustice and middle class apathy, health and environmental degradation, and so on. Hence the approach to address these should be holistic, and all of us are part of both the problem and solution.
The primary objective of our organization will always continue to be to improve the quality of lives of the people – primarily those people who are marginalised, disadvantaged and underprivileged and who are more than one-third of India’s population. This is indeed a colossal task. Our government, even 60 years after Independence – and with massive resources under its disposal – has not been able to achieve much in this area. Our government, for a variety of reasons, has also not been able to fulfill its mandated task to be the major provider of opportunities to empower the underprivileged. The civil society has to come forward and work together – wherever possible – with the government and reach out to the underprivileged people and empower them adequately to take care of their problems. What they need are opportunities, not charity.
